The superyacht career path

Every department has its own ladder, but they don't all go the same distance. Deck is the only path that leads all the way to captain — interior, galley and engineering each have a genuine ceiling, a most senior rank you can reach within that department before everything reports up to the captain instead.

Why deck is the only route to captain

The captain holds an MCA command qualification and legal responsibility for the whole vessel — a licence built through years of bridge watchkeeping and navigation experience specific to the deck/officer track. A brilliant chief stewardess or chief engineer can run their department superbly without ever holding a command ticket, because it's a different qualification path entirely, not a reflection of seniority. Every head of department reports to the captain; only one of them can become the captain.
