The captain commands the vessel — responsible for safe navigation, crew management, regulatory compliance, budgets and the owner/guest relationship. It's the top of the deck department ladder, and as much a leadership and management role as a nautical one.
What the job actually involves
Overall responsibility for navigation, safety and legal compliance
Setting and enforcing standards across every department aboard
Owner and guest relations, itinerary planning and budgeting
Liaising with the flag state, port authorities and management company
Final say on crew hiring, discipline and safety decisions
Getting hired
Years of sea time built up through the officer ranks (Officer of the Watch → Chief Officer → Master)
An MCA Master (Yachts) certificate of competence, tonnage-limited depending on experience (e.g. Master <500GT, <3000GT, unlimited)
STCW Basic Safety Training, ENG1, and command-level courses such as ECDIS, Ship Security Officer and Human Element Leadership & Management
Strong people-management and budgeting skills on top of nautical competence
Typical pay
Captain pay varies hugely with yacht size and programme — broadly €9,000 up to €20,000+ a month on the largest charter yachts.
