The ETO (Electro-Technical Officer) looks after all electrical and electronic systems: navigation electronics, communications, IT networks, entertainment and automation. It's a specialist engineering role that's become standard on yachts of around 45 metres and above.
What the job actually involves
Maintaining and repairing navigation, communication and monitoring electronics
Managing onboard IT networks, Wi-Fi and cybersecurity
Troubleshooting AV and entertainment systems for guests and crew
Planned maintenance and fault-finding across all electrical systems
Working closely with the engineering department on technical projects
Getting hired
A relevant electrical/electronic engineering qualification (HND, degree, or a recognised ETO cadetship)
An MCA-approved ETO Certificate of Competence
STCW Basic Safety Training and a valid ENG1
IT/networking experience is increasingly expected alongside traditional electrical skills
Typical pay
ETOs typically earn €4,500–€8,000 a month, rising with yacht size and the complexity of onboard systems.
